I want to let those who frequent this site know of an upcoming project that may be of interest to them, especially to pastors in full-time service. A good friend and I are currently working on a book on the ethical implications of the forced termination of pastors in which the pastor was wronged by either an individual, a group within the church, and/or even a denominational entity that might have been called in to help mediate the situation.

Stats show around 1400 to 1800 pastors per month being forced out of their ministry, and that only 54% return to any Christian ministry at all. The single greatest factor for this, as the surveys show, has not changed over the last decade --- someone wants control within the church. Often that person will start a campaign to find other members to join in the effort, and often they will make an urgent call to a denominational entity to "help" resolve the problem. Frequently, however, the denominational involvement only makes matters worse, either because of poor training or because they tend to side with the first contact from the church.

But there are serious ethical implications that must not be ignored. The damage done to pastors and their families is too great to do so. This is not simply a job to them. The numbers are just too high to believe that all of these pastors deserve to be terminated for cause. Most of the pastors that we know are hard-working, competent, faithful to their wife, good fathers, and take their work seriously, showing love and understanding to the members of their congregations. This means that a great majority are wrongfully forced out. God takes this seriously. So should we.

We are looking for Pastor's REAL LIFE stories to include in a portion of the book, that will focus on different ways these situations occur. The pastors may remain anonymous if desired, but we would like a detailed account of what happened and how it has effected both pastor, spouse, and children. If you would like to be considered, please contact me by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  with a little overview and I will be in contact with you about your story. Feel free to share this with your friends who may have had a bad experience. I hope this can be a work that will not only bring to light a much overlooked problem, but also be an encouragement to pastors who have had their lives turned upside down by "well-meaning" but seriously misguided people.

News Update

I had previously noted that the time came for my oral exams (viva voce) for my dissertation - the final step in the process of finishing my PhD in Theology. I was a little nervous, primarily because my dissertation was 471 pages. Yet, after about an hour and a half of questions, the committee returned its verdict. They said that not only had I passed the defense, but that my dissertation was the best each of them had read in the past couple of years. Needless to say, I was thrilled and humbled, as well as relieved that it was now over. One committee member said, "Let me be the first to call you Doctor. Dr. Hoke, congratulations."

Since then I have had the opportunity to pose for a couple of snaps of me in my doctoral regalia. I thought I would post those for your (or my) enjoyment at having finally made it across the finish line. (Click pics for larger image.)

My plans are to turn more of my attention now to writing, as well as preaching and teaching, and working with Rancocas Valley Baptist Church as we seek to reach out to the community. Please keep me in your prayers in these projects. I would like to have my doctoral dissertation published, and have had some interest shown by a couple of publishers, one of whom targets that area for an academic market. And I have some ideas for books dealing with aspects of the church life and health (or the lack of it). This would be of a more popular nature. In addition, there is the possibility of editing certain sermon series for which the majority of work has already been done, such as Romans, Ephesians, or perhaps the Sermon on the Mount. The primary target would be for pastors as a homiletical commentary for use in sermon preparation. Over the years I have had many requests to put the sermons available on the web site into a collection by book. The sermons on Mark were published in-house and ran to around 500 pages. Romans would probably be that long, unless edited down, or made a two volume work. Ephesians, one of my favorite books currently has 30 sermons of 8 pages. After adding a sufficient introduction to the book, it may be close to 280 pages. Even the Sermon on the Mount series runs 32 messages, and would be close to 300 pages. James is only 12 messages, and the series on the Ten Commandments is....you guessed it....only 10 messages. Those, if put into book form with the necessary historical, biblical, and cultural introductory material, would be only around 100 to 125 pages. Pray that the Lord would give me wisdom and guidance as to which sermon series should come first. By His grace, I could get one ready for editing fairly quickly and also be working on something regarding contemporary issues in the church.

I Am Humbled!

I am humbled at the way so many are still registering for access to the site even though, except for the sermons, not much else is happening right now. Hopefully, that will be changing soon, as some deadlines for work will be met, and I will be able to give more attention to the site, especially in the resources section. There, I hope to publish both scholarly articles that you may find helpful, as well as other resources that will help you in your ministry.

So thanks for registering. Pass the word along to your friends about the site, and keep me in prayer that I may do a good job with the many projects I am now working on. (Phil. 1:3-4)
